District mourns loss of student

on May 1, 2016

Dear Parents,

It is with profound sadness that I write this letter to the Warwick school community. Early Saturday morning, police confirmed that one of our high school students, Dale Hirrel, died as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic automobile accident. While Dale transferred to Warwick Valley High School just a few months ago, his warm smile and kind heart made a quick impression and touched the lives of all who knew him.

Our condolences and thoughts go out to the family and friends of our student.

The loss of a student is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress in students. During this time, as the school community processes the tragic news and copes with grief, we will offer counseling and bereavement support services to all of our students and staff. A team of counselors, school psychologists and social workers at the high school will provide support to any students or staff members in need throughout the upcoming days.

I encourage you to talk with your child about what has happened. Discussing thoughts and feelings about this situation is important in helping your child work through his or her grief.

As we await details of funeral arrangements, many community members have asked how they can support the family in this time of need. I am aware that a fund has been established to help with the costs of funeral services. Should you wish to make a donation, please visit https://www.youcaring.com/search/go?w=Dale%20Hirrel

Thank you for your support as we move forward. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this time of loss and grief.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Leach
Superintendent of Schools
