Community Message-Incident

June 20, 2020

Dear Warwick Valley School Community,

This afternoon, the District learned from a faculty member and student of a social media post with the image of a high school student depicting a racial slur written across the student’s forehead. It is our understanding this image has been shared many times with members both inside and outside of the school community. Justifiably, it is causing profound outrage.

We began an investigation immediately. While all students’ disciplinary consequences and plans for remediation must remain confidential, please know the District will strictly and swiftly enforce its Code of Conduct.

We will not waver in fighting against unlawful, racist behavior. It has no place in our schools or community. I applaud the students and faculty who continue to speak up when they witness injustice.

The District continues to receive valuable feedback from many community stakeholders. This feedback will help us incorporate systemic interventions and training as strategies for reducing racial inequities, divisive harassment, and discrimination. I look forward to keeping you updated on this planning throughout the summer.

As we move forward together, we ask all families and community members to join us in seizing these teachable moments with our students. Together, we will take the actions needed to bring about much-needed positive change.

Sincerely,

David Leach
