Community Letter: Spring Recess/COVID Update 3.26.2021

March 26, 2021

Dear WVCSD Community,

As we enter Spring Recess, we plan to return to full in-person instruction on Tuesday, April 6, as we have announced previously. However, I must again emphasize that this pandemic is not over. We are urging families to enjoy Spring Break safely — please continue to maintain safe COVID-19 practices to ensure the number of infections remains low.

From our experiences in the past year, we understand that there will be bumps along the way. We continue to follow New York State Department of Health guidelines, which require us to quarantine close contacts. A “close contact” is defined as someone who was within 6 feet of an infectious case for 10 or more minutes cumulatively in a 24-hour period, regardless of mask usage or desk shields. We’ve learned that one positive infection can result in the District being required to quarantine several students. So, we need to remain flexible and responsive.

Routine precautions needed to prevent the spread include Warwick’s 3W’s: wearing masks, washing hands, and watching your distance. Following these precautions will allow us to reopen our schools safely after the break as planned. Although we can quickly pivot to remote instruction if COVID infections rise, our students and families would undoubtedly be very disappointed.

Today, we were notified of a positive case at both the High School and Pine Island Elementary School; all families and students affected by the quarantines have been contacted.

The overview written below will provide you with a summary of COVID-19 positive cases, which have occurred since our last update on March 24, 2021. The District notified any students/families impacted by the quarantines.

Update: March 24 – March 26

Pine Island Elementary School: Pine Island Elementary has had one positive case; students needing to quarantine have been contacted.

Park Avenue Elementary School: Park Avenue Elementary has had zero positive cases.

Sanfordville Elementary School: Sanfordville Elementary has had zero positive cases.

Middle School: The Middle School has had zero positive cases.

High School: The High School has had one positive case; students needing to quarantine have been contacted.

Again, all families impacted by the quarantines above were notified.

We continue to update our COVID-19 Dashboard/Report Card daily – New York State’s COVID Report Card. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) considers Pine Island ES as a Sanfordville satellite school. Therefore, the NYSED requires the District to add Pine Island School’s COVID-19 cases to the Sanfordville Elementary report.

Have a wonderful spring recess! We look forward to seeing our students again on Tuesday, April 6th and thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

David Leach
Superintendent of Schools
