Author and live penguin visit SES for One Book/One School program!

on February 28, 2018

For the third year in a row, students at Sanfordville Elementary School have participated in the One Book/One School national program.

This year, the classic children’s book, “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard and Florence Atwater, was the selected book.

The library/media center was transformed into a penguin playground for this three-week program! The transformation was made possible by the artistic efforts of Femi Ford, Kristen Orthmann and Leah Mednick, who had students making penguins in art class! Mrs. Trone and Mrs. Tinklepaugh helped by preparing books for students.

Families, teachers, students, secretaries and the Principals read the final chapters of the book and classes had read-alouds. Mrs. Connolly read to 4th grade classes and Mrs. Maraia even read aloud to kindergarteners in the cafeteria during lunch time.

A program highlight was a visit from author Laurence Pringle on February 13. Mr. Pringle has written several non-fiction books, including one on penguins! He encouraged students to research and write – which they’ve done throughout the unit.

A very exciting finish to the program was a special visit from a live penguin! Miss Jennifer and Miss Shannon from Jenkinson’s Aquarium in Point Pleasant, NJ brought “Dassen” the penguin to visit with several classes on February 20.

Students were given a chance to see Dassen up close as she walked around in the library, and learned many interesting penguin facts during this unique experience.

The presentation was generously sponsored by the SES PTA.

It’s been another fabulous year of reading and learning through One Book/One School!
