ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA)

Warwick Valley fosters an environment in which students experience the power of words in both written and spoken form. Besides being committed to inspiring a love of literature, the District sees the study of literacy as a pathway for students to become proactive citizens of the world. From primary grades to the secondary level, literacy standards ensure that students are college and career-ready by graduation. The District focuses on developing valuable skills such as critical reading, reasoning, and the ability to speak, listen, view, and write in a variety of genres and forms.

The District’s ELA course offerings build a foundational knowledge of, and ability to communicate using, the English language, and then broaden students’ understanding – as well as their college and career prospects – through required courses and electives in specialized areas. ELA classes at Warwick Valley include Honors English, AP English Literature, AP English Language and Composition, and Pre-College Writing. There are also courses geared towards students interested in the specific areas of Journalism, Communications, and Creative Writing, and an English Senior Project that challenges students to “explore your passion; discover yourself.”

All students must pass four years of ELA and a Regents Examination in order to graduate.
