A note from Dr. Leach – April 20 student walk-out NOT a District-sponsored activity

on April 17, 2018

Dear Warwick Valley Families,

A group NOT associated with the Warwick Valley Central School District has invited students to walk out of school at 10:00 am on Friday, April 20, 2018 to “demand a local conversation about gun control.”

This event will take place at the Warwick Valley Community Center’s Doc Fry Building, and is NOT a District sponsored activity.

While the District agrees that school safety and gun control are important public policy matters, it cannot condone this off-campus activity or the associated unexcused student absences.

Students leaving school buildings and school property present some student safety concerns. Also, to condone or endorse this type of off-campus walk-out may require the District to endorse other future walkouts, without regard to viewpoint or merit, to avoid viewpoint discrimination claims.

Therefore, students who leave school and/or school grounds while school is in session to attend this activity will be unexcused in their absence and will be disciplined in accordance with the District’s 2017-18 Code of Conduct, with the likely consequence of a student lunch detention for any unexcused absence on April 20, 2018.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and your careful consideration of this matter.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Leach
Superintendent of Schools
