3 Warwick teams advance to state OM competition

One Warwick Valley Middle School team and two teams from the combined Park Avenue Elementary/Sanfordville Elementary/Middle School Odyssey of the Mind teams earned first-place finishes in the regional competition and are moving on to the state competition on April 4th at Binghamton University.

Seventy-two teams from 12 school districts (from Orange, Sullivan and Dutchess counties) competed in the Mid-Hudson Regional Odyssey of the Mind Competition – the state’s Region 5 tournament run by Orange-Ulster BOCES – on Saturday, March 7th.

The two Park Avenue/Sanfordville/Middle School teams earned first-place finishes in the Problem #2: Net Working and Problem #5 Gibberish or Not, Division I. The middle school earned a first-place in Problem #1: Longshot Solution, Division II.

Teams were scored on a combination of points earned from long-term solutions, spontaneous solutions and style.

Other district teams that placed included Middle School, Problem #2 Net Working (Division II), third place; High School, Problem #2 Net Working (Division III), second place; and Sanfordville/Park/Middle School, Problem #3 Elementary Classics… The Effective Detective (Division I), third place (tie).

The Mid-Hudson Regional Odyssey of the Mind Competition (New York State Region 5) awards ceremony took place at the Orange-Ulster BOCES Emanuel Axelrod Education Center in Goshen, N.Y. Over 500 local students, making up 72 teams from 12 schools in Orange and Dutchess Counties, challenged each other in the day-long competition.
