WVCSD expands outdoor learning area

The hybrid model chosen by the Warwick Valley Central School District allows for both ample physical distancing and the maximization of in-person instruction. One way to improve physical distancing is to expand classroom space by continuing to use outdoor areas for instruction.
“One area that we’re looking at is adding additional spaces through outdoor classrooms,’’ said Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Leach. “So if you visit Park Avenue, for example, up on the village property (Hallowed Ground) we have some beautiful outdoor classrooms with internet accessibility. We’re hopefully going to be expanding those. We asked for permission and we’re waiting to hear back from the village.”
The two current outdoor classrooms are just up the hill from the school. They feature wooden benches and are well-shaded. A third classroom area will be added close to the original two.
“Our students have been utilizing outdoor classrooms for years.” Dr. Leach said. “ As we now look to navigate the COVID-19 physical distancing requirements, outdoor learning spaces are becoming an essential asset.”
The district is also considering adding to another outdoor classroom on Park Avenue Elementary School property.
At Sanfordville Elementary School, a concrete pad is being constructed underneath the Trevor John X-C Memorial Pavilion so that space can be used as a second outdoor classroom.
