by Robert Zeller, Director of Transportation

As we all know, safety is the number one benefit of riding a school bus, but it’s not the only benefit. We also know the environment is very important. So if this is true, and one bus on the road replaces dozens of cars, why are so many parents driving their children to school? Why do so many students drive themselves to school?
We all know that school bus use reduces traffic congestion. What does it do for fuel consumption? Let’s say that all 475,000 school buses in the U.S. are parked for a year. Of the 25 million school children who ride each day, how many more will be driven to school in cars? Let’s say 75% - the other 25% would walk. We would then have 18.75 million children getting rides to and from school 180 days a year, with an average ride being approximately 6 miles total. If you do the math, you will find that there would be 18.75 million cars traveling 20.25 billion miles. If the cars get 18 miles per gallon they would burn 1.125 billion gallons of gasoline in one year. To be fair, we would have to subtract the amount of fuel used by the buses that would normally transport the same children. But the difference would still be a large one.
So if all of this is true, and you want to “go a little greener,” why not ride a school bus to school? Our district buses increase safety, greatly reduce traffic and lessen the impact on the environment.
