Boys J.V. Basketball
2007-08 Season Review
By Coach Tom Folino
The 'Cats began the season with eleven
consecutive wins followed by another winning streak of six.
They won the first-ever J.V. Basketball tournament held at
Warwick - the Cure Autism Now Tip-off Classic - with a
first-round win over Wallkill, followed by a thrilling
championship game win over Cornwall by a score of 50 - 43.
The J.V. 'Cats also had big wins over Class AA schools
Monroe-Woodbury, Middletown, Pine Bush and Clarkstown North.
Their only two losses were to Newburgh Free Academy by a 59-
49 score and to Kingston by a 64 -58 score in a game in
which Warwick was winning until the 2 minute mark of the 4th
quarter.
The 'Cats finished the season with outstanding statistics as
they scored an average of 56.3 points a game while allowing
only 41.8 points per game overall. In Division play they
scored an average of 53.0 a game while only allowing only
37.5 points per game. They also made 62% of their
free-throws this season.
Leading the 'Cats was sophomore captain Gavin H., a 6’5”
center who had an outstanding and dominating year as he
averaged 15.3 points-per-game along with double figure
rebounds. Point guard and floor general Rian W. spearheaded
the 'Cats offense as he averaged 10.2 points a game. Mark
W., a sophomore forward, averaged 9.3 points a game while
playing outstanding defense. Co-captain John D., a guard,
averaged 6.5 points a game while displaying outstanding
leadership. Thomas F. rounded out the starting five as he
averaged 6.3 points a game and played outstanding defense
from the point position of the vaunted 1-2-2 zone defense
used by the 'Cats. Sixth-man Brandon C. (who could have been
a starter) supplied instant offense off the bench as he
averaged 5.7 points per game; Brandon also showed tremendous
improvement in his ability to drive the ball to the basket.
James W., our first big man off the bench, brought
outstanding defense and rebounding along with the ability to
knock down the open jump shot. Chris A., a 6’3 forward,
provided a valuable contribution off the bench with his
rebounding and defense. Forward Eric E. provided outstanding
leadership and intelligent decision-making to the team as a
key contributor off the bench. Nick E., a forward, provided
strong rebounding and a physical style of play whenever he
stepped on the court. Collin B., a shooting guard, provided
defensive tenacity and the ability to hit the open shot. Sam
C., a forward, brought his physical presence and hustle
whenever he stepped on the court, and finally, rounding out
the team, Shane M.'s positive and upbeat personality along
with his athleticism was an important part of our team’s
success.
The J.V. Wildcats should be proud of their accomplishments
this season. They were the true meaning of what “team” is
all about. Their ability to play together, accept roles and
sacrifice for the well-being of the team, was instrumental
in their success this season. The future of Warwick
basketball looks very promising. Not only are the members of
2007-08 team outstanding basketball players and athletes
but, more importantly, they continue to be outstanding
students and citizens.
