U.S. Rep. John Hall (D-NY19) announced that Warwick Valley High School senior Chelsea D. was the 1st Place Winner of the 2008 “An Artistic Discovery” Congressional Art Competition that Hall sponsored for local high school students. The winners were announced at an Awards Ceremony and Reception with Hall at the Lycian Center for Performing Arts in Sugar Loaf, New York on May 12, 2008.
Congressman Hall sponsored the art competition for high school students in New York’s 19th Congressional District. The winners were selected by a distinguished panel of community artists from artwork submitted by students from across the district. All submitted artwork was displayed in an exhibit at the Lycian Center for Performing Arts from May 12th to May 30th.
All schools within the congressional district were invited to enter work. There were over 40 participants (8 of which were Warwick students). First place winner - Warwick senior Chelsea D. - will be flown along with two guests to Washington, DC to be a part of the ceremony honoring the other participants/winners from across the nation.
“I’m extremely proud of these young artists,” said Hall. “Their commitment to the arts exemplifies the comprehensive education we expect from our local schools.”
Chelsea D.'s “Electric Tea Party” will be displayed in the United States Capitol alongside winning artwork from Congressional districts across the country. The painting is one of three in a series and depicts a scene of a kettle and mug.
“Artists learn best by being challenged by an outside force,” said Shari Blauner, Chelsea’s art teacher at Warwick Valley High School.
This is not Chelsea’s first time winning an art contest. This year she also participated in the Vernon Township Art Exhibition and won first place in the painting category. Chelsea plans on attending the Savannah College of Art this fall.
She is a student of both music and art,
rides horses and has played polo cross in the past. At the
moment she is focusing more on her art and music and is
looking forward to attending Savannah in the fall.
