Riding
Program for
third graders a great success
The Winslow Therapeutic Riding program
has been a wonderful experience for
Mrs. Mullarkey's third graders. There is definitely a
feeling of empowerment for the children as they ride these
huge, gentle animals.
The camaraderie created from riding is evident in the way the children interact with one another. Every week, their confidence grows as they give commands to the horses and they in turn respond to the students' voices, reins, or legs. The children are also being taught how to groom the horses. They love to brush and rub the horses down. Back in school, the kids talk about the horses that they have ridden and share stories. In fact, the program has provided Mrs. Mullarkey's students ample opportunities to improve listening and communicating skills, as well as learning to take turns and develop friendships. Mrs. Mullarkey has a host of photographs that she plans to use along with a Photojournalism Project.
We want to thank and acknowledge all the volunteers at Winslow. These people have helped the self-esteem and sense of accomplishment in all of our youngsters. Riding has touched the lives of these students forever.
