April 6 - The Sanfordville Odyssey of the Mind team (Ryan M., Noah B., Austin H., Jack P., Eve H., and Grace Z.) led by Mrs. Carter took first place at the State Tournament in Binghamton this past weekend! In the Division I Earth Trek competition, the six Sanfordville students competed against 13 other teams from around the state, and will now represent New York at the World Finals in Iowa this May.

After winning first place in the Regional Competition in February at Orange/Ulster BOCES in Goshen, Mrs. Carter's Odyssey of the Mind team knew they had a shot at the State Finals in Binghamton. But First Place? Sometimes dreams do come true - and now the dream of competing in the World Finals is just a little more than a month away.

According to the Odyssey of the Mind Web site, the Earth Trek  problem that the Sanfordville team tackled requires teams to design and build a small vehicle that visits four locations. The locations are different places within one or more team-determined environment(s). Each time the vehicle leaves a location it looks different in appearance, and after leaving one of the locations it must appear to be a group of vehicles that are traveling together. The team's performance incorporates the visits to the locations, the environments, and the changes in appearance of the vehicle.

Sounds complicated? Odyssey problems usually are. That is why teams of students work for months on their solutions. Their effort, time, dedication and cooperation are essential elements in a winning team.

Dr. Greenhall, Mr. Longfield and the entire school district congratulate the Sanfordville students and all the district teams who worked so hard and did their best at every step in the Odyssey of the Mind problem-solving venture.

Good luck in Iowa!
