Our visiting Pirate showed that books are our greatest treasure. |
The Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Program was a wonderful success this year. We finished up our program with an assembly outside on a gorgeous spring day.
Classes had fun participating in different “pirate” stations. Our theme this year is “Books Ahoy,” and the program was kicked off by an assembly during which the entire school was treated to a visit by a pirate! We all know that books are the greatest treasure and to prove that to our pirate friend we have all been busy reading to show him that there is a lot of treasure to be found at Park Avenue School.
Each class has decorated a sail for their pirate ship and the ships (complete with pirates) are now sailing down the front hallway of the school. There is a wonderful treasure chest in the library filled with beads and, of course the real treasure: books!
Thank you to all of the parent and teacher volunteers who have put in so much time and effort to make this year’s program such a success: Jude Mehlenbacher, Michelle Branch, Gerry Darby, Claire Harrison, Robyn Eaton, Megan Finn, Heidi Held, Kathy Nuttall, Laura Parkins, Charleen Sommerlad and Jen Weiss.
Of course the program would not even be possible without the support of the parents who are making reading a priority at home. The whole program is designed so our students will develop the lifelong habit of reading, which research shows is critical for success in school and beyond. Kudos to those parents who are taking the time to make sure their children are participating in the Parents as Reading Partners Program. Happy Reading!
