high school news - Girl Talk

Girl Talk logosquare bulletLocal Students host weekly radio show

Every Saturday morning, four local girls get together to talk. Sometimes they talk about problems teens face. Other times they talk about music or what to do on a snowy, rainy or otherwise dreary day. The only constant: when they talk, people listen. They do their talking on a live radio show.

Warwick Valley High School students Sam P., Kaitlyn F., Lauren B. and Amanda A. host a

weekly radio show from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on WTBQ 99.1FM and 1110AM. Live streaming video of the show is also available on the WTBQ Web site, http://wtbq.com, so listeners worldwide can view the broadcast as well as listen in.

Girl Talk was originally known as Students For Wish Kids, a 2007 radio show promoting
the school-based Students For Wish Kids group. Over time, the number of people participating in the radio show dwindled and by 2008 the show evolved into Teen Talk featuring the four current Girl Talk hosts and as many boys.

One day last year, the Teen Talk boys didn’t show up. No worries for these girls though. Apparently they had plenty to say. People, including folks at the station, loved their solo show and Girl Talk was born.

And apparently, people are still loving it.

Frank Truatt, WTBQ station manager, said not only are the girls a pleasure to work with, but the show has captured an impressive audience, including a high percentage of female listeners. microphone

Mr. Truatt said the show’s success can serve as an important vehicle for its hosts and the industry alike.

The teens get a peek at what goes on behind the scenes at the station and real-life experience that might lead them down a career path. Likewise, the industry recognizes today’s teens and young adults are more likely to tune in to their portable media players before anything else. As a result, industry leaders are striving to find ways to get younger listeners more aware and involved in all that radio has to offer.

A show like Girl Talk can certainly help bridge that listening gap.

Be sure and tune in to Girl Talk Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on WTBQ 99.1FM and 1110AM. Or check out live streaming video of the show on the WTBQ Web site at http://wtbq.com.
