Fishing club hopes to develop pond into great fishing spot and environmental learning center
Feb. 1, 2012 - Warwick Valley High School students who participate in the Hook, Line & Sinker Club have been busy learning about fishing, the environment, essentials of fundraising and the revitalization of the Sanfordville Pond. As many club members say, “We are an active club that actually does things.”
Their latest project, funded through the selling of their own “gourmet popcorn” and a generous grant from the Community Foundations program, is a 24 foot aeration windmill. The windmill was assembled by the Hook, Line & Sinker Club and erected on the hillside overlooking the four acre Sanfordville Pond.
This windmill aerates and oxygenates the pond and is providing an improved habitat for the stocking of the pond, which will occur later this spring.
“We are fortunate and grateful for the support that the school district has given us,” said the club’s co-advisors Greg Lisack and Ken Kolwicz. “We would also like to thank Environmental Science teachers Ed Sattler and Jason Touw for their technical know-how.”
Future goals for the windmill project are to add a solar panel to the tower to enhance the overall aeration, and to develop the pond into a great fishing spot where students can participate, learn and have a great time. The club’s long-term goal is to develop this site into an environmental learning center that can be used by the entire district.
The Hook, Line & Sinker Club has an active membership of about 30 students, and is advised by Greg Lisack and Ken Kolwicz.
