Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony January 4, 2012
Jan. 5, 2012 - The Warwick Valley High School Boys Basketball Program held its third annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Wed., Jan. 4, 2012. The ceremony took place before the start of the boys varsity home game vs. Pine Bush High School.
Tribute was paid to five men whose efforts, commitment and past accomplishments on the hardwood as former Wildcats helped shape the history of Warwick Wildcat Basketball.
The Class of 2012 consists of the following five former Warwick Valley High School basketball players:
Wisner Buckbee, Sr., Class of 1955
Rocco Garcia, Class of 1943
Joe Green, Class of 1960
Charles Hasbrouck, Class of 1953
Art Quackenbush, Class of 1966
The Boys Basketball Hall of Fame Committee selected the five individuals.
Buckbee, a 1955 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, was a three-year starter on the varsity team and played under Hall of Fame Coach Vito Magdelinskas his senior year. Buckbee, a 6'5" center, scored a career high of 33 points as a sophomore versus New York Military Academy during the 1953-4 season - a high school record until 1982. Buckbee played at the old Park Avenue High School and was an excellent free-throw shooter and rebounder. He was the captain of the 1954-55 team and also the leading scorer. He helped lead his team to the play-offs two consecutive seasons. Buckbee's most memorable moments were scoring 33 points vs. NYMA and playing basketball with his teammates and coaches.
Garcia, a 1943 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, was a two-year starter (1941–43). Garcia, who played the guard position, was the leading scorer (10.2 per game) and second-leading rebounder for the 1942-43 Wildcats. He helped lead his team to an undefeated record of 12-0 and the Orange County League title as they beat Monroe-Woodbury in the championship game by a score of 46-40. Garcia was also a key member of the 1941-42 team, which finished in second place with a 10-2 record, as they lost in the championship game to Highland Falls by a 53-51 score. These were two of Garcia’s most memorable moments as a Wildcat basketball player. Garcia was an all-around athlete, as he is also a member of the Warwick Football Hall Of Fame and played baseball at Warwick.
Green, a 1960 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, was a three-year varsity starter, 1957-60. He was captain on the 1958-60 varsity teams. As a senior, Green was selected as the Player of the Year as he was the leading scorer of the Orange County League (OCL), averaging 20 points per game. The 1959-60 team lost to Monroe-Woodbury in the OCL championship game. Green helped lead the Wildcats to the play-offs three consecutive years. His most memorable moment was a buzzer beater three quarter court shot that rounded his scoring average to 20 points per game. Green was a Physical Education teacher in the Warwick Valley Central School District for 16 years. During this time he was the Head Coach of the Football program for 10 years and led the varsity team to three OCL championships. Green is also a member of the Warwick Football Hall of Fame.
Hasbrouck, a 1953 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, was a two-year starter for the 'Cats. He was the captain of the 1952-53 teams. Hasbrouck, who played the point guard position, was an outstanding set shooter who was very unselfish, looking to set up his teammates first. He was the leading free-throw shooter on the 1951-52 team. His most memorable high school basketball moment was when the 1952-53 Wildcats upset undefeated Washingtonville High School by a 45-36 score, as Washingtonville was held to only nine second half points. Hasbrouck was a three-sport standout as he also played football and baseball. He was the captain of the 1952 varsity football team.
Quackenbush, a 1966 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, was a two-year varsity starter. Quackenbush was the starting forward on the 1965-66 Section 9 Class B championship team under Vito Magdelinskas. He was an All-OCL (Orange County League) team selection during the 1965-66 season. He finished as the 4th leading scorer in the OCL, averaging 17 points per game. Quackenbush also helped lead his team to the Section 9 Class B championship game during the 1964-65 season. His most memorable high school basketball moments were the Section 9 championship game win over Tappan Zee, and playing with a great group of teammates and coaches during his career at Warwick. Quackenbush, a retired high school teacher and principal, was an outstanding varsity basketball coach at Morristown Central High School as he led his teams to three league titles, four Section 10 championships and two appearances in the New York State Regional Finals. He was named Coach of the Year three times.
