Confirmed Case of Pertussis (whooping cough) at WVMS

May 1, 2012 - The Warwick Valley School District has been informed that there is a confirmed case of pertussis, also called whooping cough, in the middle school - one of more than 30 cases diagnosed in Orange County this year.

Pertussis is a contagious respiratory tract infection that is treatable with antibiotics. Signs and symptoms of pertussis include runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, red & watery eyes, a mild fever and dry cough. If your child experiences any of the above symptoms, call your pediatrician.

An informational letter to parents will go home with students tomorrow. Parents are urged to read the FAQs linked below and to call their physician if they have further questions.

School Nurses

The School Registered Nurse acts as a resource and liaison for the students, parents, faculty and administrative staff comprising our school community. The School Nurse is responsible for the care of ill and injured students and fulfilling the NYS mandated health programs listed below. Communication is a dynamic process, so please check back for any new information and updates which will be posted on this website. Learn more about "The Value of a School Nurse."

HEALTH EXAMS AND FORMS

Required physicals
NYS law requires students in grades K, 2, 4, 7 and 10, as well as new entrants, to have a physical examination. A health form was mailed home in May to students entering the above grade levels. Please return by Oct. 1. Any student without a physical on file after Oct. 1 or 15 days after registration will be scheduled for an exam by the school practitioner.

A new NYS law also requires Body Mass Index (BMI) and weight-status-category for students in grades K, 2, 4, 7 and 10, as well as new entrants, to be reported for these grade levels. Click here to read letter from the District Coordinator of Health and Attendance.

SPORTS PHYSICAL INFORMATION

Sports physical form
In addition to a yearly sports physical, a Sports Physical Update Form is due from each prospective athlete PRIOR to participation in each sport season. The Sports Physical Update Form (or Interval Health History Form) is available from your coach or in the nurse's office. It must be returned to the school nurse prior to the start of tryouts. If the update form is not turned in and the physical is not up to date, the student will not be on the eligibility list for sports and will not be allowed to participate.

Health History Disclosure
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurring in young athletes has been in the news recently. Often an underlying genetic heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopahty (HCM) is the most common cause. This is a genetic abnormality causing an enlarged left ventricle in the heart, which can trigger fatal heart rhythms. Rhythm disturbances is a second reason.

Currently there is no national screening standard for high school and college athletes in the U.S. The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommend that schools conduct pre-participation screening that consists of a physical examination and a medical history (which some consider just as important as the physical itself).

One question recommended by these two groups which we include on our health history is whether anyone in your immediate family below the age of 50 (fifty) died of a sudden heart attack. If you answer yes to this question, the Warwick Valley CSD Medical Director is requiring cardiac clearance before your student can participate in sports. This requirement is to ensure the safety for your child when there is a history of heart disease in a parent, grandparent, first degree aunt and/or uncle.

If you have any questions regarding this requirement please contact your family
physician before submitting a sports physical for clearance by the WVCSD Medical Director AND before the start of high school sports seasons. This will ensure that your child is ready to participate in the sport of his/her choice.

HAVE A NEW ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER?

If you have recently moved into or within the school district, changed phone numbers or emergency contacts, please contact Central Registration at 987-3050, ext. 9.

MEDICATIONS

Medication administration in school requires a written order from a licensed prescriber along with written parental permission. All medications (prescription and over-the-counter) must adhere to these guidelines. Medication must be brought in by a parent in the original container.

ABSENCES AND ATTENDANCE

If your child is absent from school (K-12), it is important for the parent/legal guardian to call your child’s school on the day of the absence. Please send in a written note when your child returns to school and hand in to the health/attendance office. If your child is absent for more than a few days, the school nurse may request a written note from your child’s doctor.
Legal reasons for an absence from school include sickness, health treatments, death in the family, religious observance or a court appearance. Upon returning to school, or when asking for early dismissal, all students (K-12) must have a note of explanation signed and dated by a parent or guardian.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

Children should be kept home if they show signs of a cold, parasitic or other infection. After a fever, a child should not return to school until the temperature has been normal for at least 24 hours.

Please call the school nurse and inform her of your child's illness.
